Blank Canvas
Winter 2025
Artist book produced with varying media such as photography and painting, bound together by a canvas cover.
With an overarching idea for a book on perception and visibility, I wanted to curate a space for the different ways we view and take in the world around us, toying with control over perception, layering, and memory.
Process
I am really proud of my concept and the time and effort I put into this piece. Editing down my ideas from the large pool of art I wanted to create and include was a crucial step. There were a lot of different directions I could have taken this book, which led me to create the cover out of stiff poster board and canvas fabric, causing the cover and back to appear like an “empty canvas”. This allowed me to craft a “gallery” of art inside, all falling under my original concept of perception and visibility, and not limiting myself to one type of medium. Going along with the idea of a gallery in a book, I added blurbs about the pieces to help guide the viewer and consumer of the art to the ideas and meanings behind each piece. I have discovered about myself that I enjoy creating works that require the viewer to sit with the art, and then reach the meaning that I was going for. I would like to have added a lining along the inside of the cover and back to hide the raw edges of the fabric, and to work with images all on one size of paper (9″x12″), but with the time and materials I had, I feel like I accomplished my vision for the final project.
